PARKS MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The position provides preventive and general maintenance on all city park property and other city properties as assigned. The position provides support for recreational events, including sound and light gear, stage set-up and similar activities. Reports to Park Maintenance Foreman.
NATURE OF WORK: Work is generally complicated and non-standardized. Work is assigned by supervisor who provides general direction in following established practices and clear-cut policies. Choices or decisions are made with supervisory approval in such areas as small purchases and general repairs. Supervisor’s input occurs while work is in process. Errors may cause delays in work or losses in expenditure for material and/or equipment or unjustified work time. The employee has daily contact with other department employees, other city employees, employees in other organizations, and the public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions are fundamental job duties. They do not include marginal tasks, which are also performed but are not incidental to the primary functions. The essential functions identified for this job are:
Performs plumbing and electrical repair and maintenance work following established work methods and safety standards.
Performs carpentry and painting work utilizing correct work procedures and following safety procedures.
Supports departmental events by providing assistance as required.
Prepares and maintains department managed facilities for seasonal operation and closing.
Completes such additional duties as inspecting and repairing playground equipment, requesting material, and documenting and recommending frequency of building maintenance.
Maintains current inventory of tools, material, and equipment.
Serves as supervisor in the absence of Park Maintenance Foreman
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Equipment: The employee uses or operates a variety of small hand and power tools and machines. The employee operates vehicles and light equipment, as well as using electronic devices.

Critical skills/expertise identified for this job include:
Broad knowledge of electricity to install and repair electrical wiring.
Ability to pass approved swimming pool operations class and to maintain certification.
Ability to pass approved playground certification class and to maintain certification.
Ability to pass federal National Incident Management System courses as required for government supervisors
Practical knowledge of sound systems, staging and lighting as to set-up, maintenance, and use of such equipment.
Working knowledge of carpentry to do basic carpentry work.
Ability to read and accurately follow diagrams and detailed written instructions for installation purposes.

Minimum Qualifications: A High School education or equivalent plus related work experience with basic courses in electrical, plumbing and carpentry preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee driver’s license. Must be able and available to workdays, nights, weekends and holidays.
Must be able to within 24 months of employment to pass the Aquatic Facility Operator certification course and test and Certified Playground Safety Inspector course and test.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The position does not supervise full-time employees but may provide work directions to seasonal employees.
