Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Parks & Facilities Manager, the Athletic Fields Foreman is responsible for the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields and associated facilities. This position requires strong leadership, customer service, and decision-making skills, particularly related to field playability and inclement weather. The Foreman also conducts safety inspections of playgrounds and oversees the work of assigned full-time and part-time maintenance personnel to ensure quality and efficiency.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions regardless of weather conditions. The employee is often exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, loud noise, dirt, foul odors and occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds. The employee will operate light duty vehicle up to 2 1/2 ton truck, tractors, riding, push or pull mowers, weed eater, chain saws, rakes, shovels, etc.

The Athletic Fields Foreman is responsible for overseeing and performing the maintenance of athletic fields, including mowing, field lining, dragging, aerating, turf repair, and irrigation system maintenance. The position involves providing day-to-day direction and support to assigned full-time and part-time staff to ensure tasks are completed effectively and on schedule. The Foreman troubleshoots and performs basic irrigation system repairs, including adjusting sprinkler heads, replacing valves, and monitoring automated timers.
This role also includes conducting playground safety inspections in compliance with CPSI standards. The Foreman makes field playability decisions following inclement weather and is responsible for communicating conditions and closures to appropriate parties. The position requires operation and maintenance of a wide range of groundskeeping and turf equipment and setting timers and lighting systems for athletic facilities. Field preparations and maintenance are often required during night and weekend athletic league play. The Foreman applies fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals as needed and is expected to communicate effectively across departments to coordinate schedules, resources, and field usage.
Customer service is a key component of this role, requiring interaction with athletic organizations, leagues, and the public. The individual must demonstrate initiative, the ability to learn quickly, and work well in a fast-paced environment. Additional duties include maintaining records and submitting reports related to inspections, maintenance, irrigation schedules, and field usage. The Foreman may also assist with general park maintenance as needed.
The Athletic Fields Foreman assists with planting, seasonal landscaping, irrigation adjustments, and other facility repairs. During the off-season, the Foreman may support maintenance of the swimming pool and tennis courts. The position also contributes to the setup and breakdown of special events as required.
This position requires flexibility in scheduling and will include work outside of the regular work schedule, including evenings and weekends, to support athletic league operations, field maintenance, and special events.
Required Knowledge & Abilities: The Foreman must possess knowledge of turf management, sports field layout and maintenance, irrigation system components, and playground inspection protocols. The ability to operate, repair, and maintain irrigation systems and other related equipment is essential. The position requires the ability to assess weather conditions and make timely, informed decisions regarding field use. Strong organizational and communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The individual must be able to delegate tasks, monitor progress, and provide feedback to team members.
Training & Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent is required, along with considerable experience in athletic field maintenance, turf management, irrigation systems, or related fields. A valid Tennessee Operator’s License is required. CPR, AED, and First Aid certification is required or must be obtained. Pesticide certification is preferred or must be obtained within one year of employment. CPSI certification is preferred or must be obtained within one year of employment.
Ability to: Ability to plan and supervise the work of others; use necessary tools and equipment in performance of required skills. This would include the ability to operate a personal computer and associated word-processing and spreadsheet software; evaluate situations and make decisions; express ideas clearly, concisely and convincingly, both orally and in writing; keep records and make reports.
This position is considered safety sensitive and is subject to the City’s drug and alcohol random testing policy.

The employee must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, respond quickly to safety issues, and communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and the public. The ability to stay calm under pressure, make informed decisions, and maintain detailed records is essential.
