Nature of Work
This is very responsible supervisory and recreational work assisting with the coordination of all aquatic activities for swimming pools operated by the Parks & Recreation Department. Activities associates with the job include assisting with planning and coordinating aquatic programs for various age groups, serving as a lifeguard and lifeguard trainer, providing swimming lessons and directing water exercise classes. Additional activities include assisting with the overseeing maintenance activities for the pools, explaining pool rules and regulations to program participants and assisting with the coordination of special events and activities. Job responsibilities require considerable experience supervising aquatic activities and programs, thorough knowledge of water safety rules and life saving practices and techniques, sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job, considerable knowledge of the cleaning and maintenance requirements of large public pools and strong organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills. Job performance is evaluated by the Parks & Recreation Director and Aquatics Manager through review of the effectiveness of aquatics programs, knowledge and expertise in providing swimming instruction and staff training, adherence of participants to recreation facility rules and regulations, ability to effectively assist with supervising and directing the activities of assigned staff, level of support provided for various recreational activities and organizational, interpersonal and decision making skills.
Illustrative Examples of Work
-Assists with planning and coordinating all aquatic programs for the swimming pools operated by the Parks & Recreation Department including budget preparation and management.
-Assists with planning and supervising, as well as directing the activities of staff assigned to aquatic programs, activities, and special events.
-Serves as a lifeguard and trains other staff in lifesaving and first aid techniques and procedures.
-Performing chemical testing and application processes and performing backwash of the swimming pools.
-Teaches swimming lessons and directs group water exercise classes.
-Assists with coordinating pool maintenance activities for staff and assigning specific maintenance tasks when required.
-Assists with the preparation and submission of program participation reports and participates in staff scheduling meetings.
-Oversees and assists with greeting and assisting visitors and patrons participating in recreation center events and activities.
-Assists with enrolling program participants; receives records and accounts for fees and other charges when necessary.
-Oversees, assists and directly observes the actions of swimmers, maintaining discipline and enforcing water safety and pool rules.
-Provides emergency life saving services to swimmers in need and as first responder in the community center in case of an emergency.
-Oversees and assists with cleaning the pool and related facilities on a regular schedule and testing and adjusting pool chemicals.
-Opens and closes swimming facilities as required and oversees this function when supervising.
-Ensures that the pools and pool decks are clean and brushes and vacuums the pools when necessary.
-Notifies the appropriate personnel in the event of emergency situations, discipline problems, malfunctioning equipment, etc.
-Explains the rules and regulations required to use the swimming pools and/or participate in programs and activities.
-Assists with planning and coordinating special events and activities held at the pools with other divisions, departments and/or agencies.
-Provides swimming lessons, CPR and First Aid training.
-Performs related duties as required.
Necessary Requirements of Work
Graduation from an accredited high school supplemented with additional training and experience in supervising aquatics programs and related recreational activities; thorough knowledge of recreational facilities and swimming pool operations; thorough knowledge of water safety rules and life saving and first aid practices and techniques; thorough knowledge of cleaning and maintenance requirements for large municipal pools; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job; strong interpersonal, organizational and decision making skills; some supervisory experience or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
-Thorough knowledge of water safety rules, life saving and first aid practices and techniques.
-Thorough knowledge of the maintenance and cleaning requirements of large municipal swimming pools including backflow processes and chemical testing and application procedures.
-Thorough knowledge of recreational facilities operating rules and regulations.
-Thorough knowledge of the fees and other related charges for participating in recreational activities and events.
-Knowledge of established purchasing and procurement policies and procedures.
-Knowledge of effective supervisory techniques and practices including the direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff.
-Knowledge of effective training techniques and practices.
-Ability to effectively plan and coordinate a variety of aquatics programs and events.
-Ability to effectively monitor and observe the activities of individuals participating in recreational activities, swimming programs and classes, etc.
-Ability to effectively assist with supervising and directing the activities of assigned staff.
-Ability to interact with participants, co-workers and the public in a professional and courteous manner.
-Ability to ensure adherence of staff to all established policies and procedures and perform job assignments in a timely and dependable manner.
-Ability to enforce established rules in a diplomatic and impartial manner.
-Ability to compile information and prepare accurate and thorough reports.
-Ability to provide effective and informative training classes and individualized instruction.
-Skill in swimming, lifeguarding, water rescue techniques, and administering CPR and First Aid.
Necessary Special Requirements
-Possession of CPR, First Aid, AED and Water Safety Instructor certifications.
-Possession of Lifeguard Instructor, CPO or AFO, and AAI or AEA Water Exercise
-Possession of Water Safety Instructors Certification
-Instructor certifications required within one year of employment.
-Must be at least 18 years of age.
Physical Requirements
This medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
Sudden bursts of energy requiring excessive force maybe required for emergency rescue operations
Work requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping
Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards.
